After facing challenges in its own AI research Apple is now partnering with OpenAI. While Apple has created its large language model (LLM) for basic tasks like transcribing voice memos, editing photos, improving Safari searches, and auto-replying in Mail and Messages, it found that Google and OpenAI are much more advanced in chatbot technology. However, this collaboration is speculated as a temporary measure while Apple continues to work on its own AI technologies.

Apple is also exploring AI applications beyond chatbots. The company is reportedly developing two robotic devices powered by LLMs: a table-top robotic arm with a display similar to an iPad, and a mobile robot that can follow users and do chores. Additionally, Apple plans to add cameras and AI capabilities to future AirPods, showing a broad approach to integrating AI across its product lineup.

WWDC 2024 will begin on June 10, with the introduction of iOS 18 expected to showcase significant AI advancements and Apple’s focus on artificial intelligence. Traditionally, Apple unveils both software and hardware updates at this event, but this year, the whole emphasis is on software. This shift highlights the importance of iOS 18, which is rumoured to be the most significant update for iPhones yet, largely because of its AI enhancements.
