Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, have created advanced robots that can guard India’s borders and provide real-time surveillance, even in tough terrains. These AI-powered robots, designed to boost national security, were developed by Da Spatio Rhobotique Laboratory Pvt. Ltd (DSRL), a startup incubated at IIT Guwahati. Officials said that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has already acknowledged the system’s potential and the Indian Army is conducting field trials to test its efficiency.

Advanced border surveillance with AI

Unlike traditional methods of border protection, such as drones, stationary cameras, and manual patrolling, these robots are designed to overcome challenges like bad weather, difficult terrains, and limited endurance.

Arnab Kumar Barman, CEO of DSRL, explained how the new technology can transform border security.

“Equipped with seamless pole traversal capabilities, adaptive obstacle navigation, and AI-driven reconnaissance, the system is a game-changer for border protection, critical infrastructure surveillance, and strategic defense applications. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge, AI-driven surveillance solutions that address the evolving challenges of national security,” he said.

24/7 vigilance, made in India

The robotic system can work around the clock and in challenging conditions.

“This robotic system is designed to operate seamlessly in difficult terrains, ensuring 24/7 vigilance. We are proud to contribute to India’s vision of self-reliance in defense technology and are committed to further innovations that strengthen our national security,” Barman added.

Multi-sensor intelligence for better threat detection

The robots come equipped with advanced sensors, making them more effective at gathering intelligence, detecting threats, and preventing security breaches.

Keyur Sorathia, Head of IIT Guwahati’s Technology Incubation Centre, pointed out the importance of this innovation for India’s defense.

“The AI-driven robotic surveillance system exemplifies the transformative potential of deep-tech startups in strengthening India’s defense capabilities. With the Indian Army actively conducting field trials, the surveillance system is advancing toward large-scale deployment in sensitive areas and military stations,” Sorathia said.

Strengthening India’s borders with innovation

This homegrown technology is also designed to tackle modern threats like rogue drones and infiltration attempts.

“This cutting-edge, indigenous technology is set to fortify national security by countering modern threats such as rogue drones and infiltration attempts. This breakthrough marks a crucial step in strengthening the nation’s frontiers with homegrown innovation,” Sorathia added.
