Just hours after US rival Apple revealed its new iPhone designed with artificial intelligence (AI), Chinese tech giant Huawei on Tuesday introduced its new smartphone, dubbed the world's first triple-folding phone. Huawei executive Richard Yu officially announced the Mate XT during a major address at the company's headquarters in the southern city of Shenzhen.

The Mate XT was initially intended to be a high-end phone for a specific market, but prior to its release, more than three million people expressed interest in purchasing one.
The phone is marketed with a sleek red and gold design, and it will be on sale on September 20.

During the speech, Yu stated, "Huawei has always been a leader in the foldable phone industry." "This is the world's first triple-folding phone," he remarked. "We have put in a huge amount of effort into solving the problems regarding mass production and product reliability," he continued.

Its release coincides with the announcement by Apple, a rival of Huawei in the technology race, of its iPhone 16, which is designed for generative artificial intelligence.

Features of Mate XT

The Huawei Mate XT includes a 10-inch inner screen made up of three merged portions that fold back to resemble a standard smartphone; the Mate XT is thicker when closed and unfolded due to the three panels rather than a single display like a typical smartphone. The Huawei Mate XT has two hinges that allow the screen to extend or fold back.

Huawei also cites Ultimate Design right next to the Mate XT name announcement in the teaser, indicating the high price tag the Mate XT triple folding phone will have due to the company's Ultimate Design brand. It is likely that the Huawei Mate XT will be more expensive than the Mate X3, which is priced around $1,825 in China.
