Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online knowledge platform powered by his AI assistant Grok. The site went live on Monday in what Musk described as “version 0.1,” featuring over 885,000 articles at launch. For comparison, the English version of Wikipedia hosts more than seven million entries.

Musk said that a much stronger update, “version 1.0,” will be released soon and promised it will be “10X better” than the current version.

Musk shared the purpose of the platform on X, the social media platform he owns. "The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," he wrote. He added that although the site may not be perfect, it will “strive toward that goal.”

In another post, Musk said that Grokipedia is fully open source, meaning anyone can use its content for free.

According to AFP, the launch had originally been planned for late September. Musk said he delayed it because he wanted to “purge out the propaganda.”

Musk has repeatedly accused Wikipedia of being politically biased, claiming it is “controlled by far-left activists.” Earlier, he said Wikipedia should not be treated as a final reference source for X’s Community Notes because its editorial control is “extremely left-biased.”

Wikipedia, which began in 2001, describes itself as a neutral, collaborative encyclopedia run by volunteers and supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.

How Grokipedia works

Unlike Wikipedia, which depends on human editors, Grokipedia relies on AI. The platform automatically creates and updates articles using models developed by xAI, Musk’s AI company. Grok, the AI system, is integrated into X and is used to generate most of the content.

Soon after launch, several users pointed out similarities between Grokipedia and Wikipedia. Some claimed that many articles appear to be copied “word for word,” including the formatting.

One user wrote to Musk: “If you put a page from Grokipedia through Grok and asked for the flaws and logical fallacies in the page, it will give you ALL of the flaws. This is embarrassing.”

However, others supported the project and argued that there are noticeable differences between the two platforms. Some users welcomed the idea of having an alternative source for online reference material.
