In the ever-changing landscape of technological advancements, AI in India witnessed rapid progress in recent times exemplified by the rise of AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. The acceleration in technology promises to shape industries, societies and economies for the foreseeable future as AI evolves beyond categories, growing into spaces such as that of art and content which includes text, image, video, music and codes.

Amidst this, India has emerged as a pivotal contributor in shaping the global AI landscape.

The AI Index Report 2023 which is released by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centred AI has underscored India's significance within the AI ecosystem. The report paints a compelling picture of India's progress in AI research and development, with the share of Indian publications soaring from 1.3% in 2010 to a substantial 5.6% in 2021.

It is also to be noted that nearly 1% of Indian researchers have actively participated in the creation of Large Language and Multimodal Models (LLMs). These foundation models which are meticulously trained on vast datasets have not only made AI more approachable but have also stimulated increased investments and innovations in the field. In terms of AI skills penetration, data from LinkedIn shows that India leads the game with the highest AI skills followed by the U.S., Germany, Israel, Canada and the U.K as of 2022.

Since, AI took the centre stage globally, countries across the world including India are building frameworks to enable digital services for socio-economic impact, transform public services and facilitate policymaking. According to reports, India is steering innovation with 'Make AI in India and Make AI work for India' programs.

Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has made steps for implementing for 'National Program on Artificial Intelligence' for development for ‘AI for all’, an AI-based solution which focuses on inclusion and empowerment.

The Government of India has also launched several initiatives to encourage the development of AI while aiming to create an environment for AI research, innovation, and implementation across various sectors. By setting up AI research institutes, AI centers of excellence and other initiatives, the Government of India is leveraging AI to foster economic growth, improve public services and address societal issues.
