Bengaluru set to install Doppler weather radar

Soil testing has already begun, and Nandi Hills has been designated by the IMD as the optimum location for the radar installation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Bengaluru will build its first Doppler weather radar to improve its weather forecasting skills. This development comes at a time when the city is expecting rain for the next week, which increases the need for precise weather forecasts. The city’s capacity to track and react to weather conditions will be greatly enhanced by the new radar, which is anticipated to be operational shortly.

Doppler weather radars are sophisticated devices that give current information on wind speed, precipitation, and storm formation. Doppler radars, in contrast to conventional weather radars, can track the movement of raindrops, which improves meteorologists’ ability to predict severe weather events. For cities like Bengaluru, where population density and rapid development make them more susceptible to weather-related interruptions, this capability is essential.

Karnataka now gets its weather information from radars in Goa, Hyderabad, and Chennai. More localized weather forecasts will be possible by installing a local Doppler radar. These forecasts are crucial for early warnings about thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The radar would increase public safety and preparation by improving weather forecasts’ precision and accuracy, according to N Puviarasan, chief of IMD Bengaluru.

Soil testing has already begun, and Nandi Hills has been designated by the IMD as the optimum location for the radar installation. The IMD has other plans to use the property at the Indian Air Force facility in Yelahanka if Nandi Hills is unsuitable. The radar’s working range of 250 kilometers is intended to enable it to track weather patterns over a substantial area of the state.

Shobha Karandlaje, the Union Minister of State for MSME, Labour, and Employment, has played a significant role in promoting this initiative by highlighting its potential advantages for the area. It is anticipated that the deployment of the radar will strengthen the early warning system, which is essential for reducing the effects of natural disasters on the economy and infrastructure.
