Apple is set to introduce substantial changes with the upcoming iPhone 16 series, slated for release in September 2024. Significantly, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to feature the same camera systems, a move that differs from the varied camera setups seen in last year’s models.
Previously, the iPhone 15 Pro Max included a 5X optical zoom telephoto camera, while the smaller iPhone 15 Pro had a 3X zoom lens. For the new lineup, both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are anticipated to include the tetraprism camera, which offers up to 5X optical zoom. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, "Apple will include the tetraprism camera, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year, in the next generation of Pro models." This marks a return to Apple’s earlier strategy of equipping Pro models with identical camera capabilities.
In terms of processing power, all four models in the iPhone 16 series are expected to use the same chip, a departure from the iPhone 15 series where only the Pro models received the A17 Pro chip. The entire iPhone 16 lineup is likely to be powered by the A18 chip, with the Pro models possibly featuring more Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) cores, possibly branded as the A18 Pro.
Advanced Camera Technology
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models are also set to include the "Action Button," which was introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This customizable button replaces the mute switch and can perform various functions. Additionally, a new "Capture Button" is expected to be available across the iPhone 16 series. This haptic button would allow users to take photos with customizable features.
Apple Intelligence features, which were initially exclusive to the Pro models in the iPhone 15 series, may be expanded to the standard models in the iPhone 16 series. These features, introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), include AI-powered tools for tasks like text generation and image creation, enhanced Siri capabilities, and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The iPhone 16 Pro models will also see a size increase, with the iPhone 16 Pro growing to 6.3 inches and the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 6.9 inches. The standard iPhone 16 models will keep the same size as their predecessors but will receive minor design tweaks, including additional buttons.
With the tetraprism camera being included in both Pro models, Kuo predicts a 160% increase in component shipments. He also hinted at future developments, such as a 48-megapixel sensor for the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025 and further improvements to the telephoto camera in the iPhone 19 by 2027.
