On the second day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Indian cricket team wore black armbands to honour the memory of Dr Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, who passed away in New Delhi.
Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two terms from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92 on March 14. He died at AIIMS after losing consciousness at his home, reportedly due to health complications associated with his old age.
"The Indian team is wearing black armbands to pay tribute to former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, who has passed away," said the BCCI.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, a quiet and humble technocrat, became one of India’s longest-serving Prime Ministers, leading the country for 10 years. He was also the leader of the Congress Party in the Rajya Sabha, known for his honesty and integrity. Singh was chosen for the role in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
India got off to a sloppy start on Friday. Requiring four wickets to finish off Australia's first innings, India's pacers, except for Jasprit Bumrah, struggled in the first half-hour, giving easy runs to overnight batters Steve Smith and Pat Cummins. Fielding lapses also didn't help their cause. After fighting back with four late wickets on day one, leaving Australia at 311 for six, a better performance was expected from the visitors. The previous day had seen teen debutant Sam Konstas shine with a thrilling knock at the MCG.
There was tension on the field in the hot weather, with a large crowd of 87,242 people watching. Virat Kohli was booed by the Australian crowd after he accidentally bumped into Konstas, a young Australian batsman, on the pitch. This happened after Konstas had been hitting India’s bowlers aggressively.
