Since the victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Indian cricket team has struggled with a series of disappointing results. India lost the ODI series in Sri Lanka and suffered a surprising first Test series defeat at home in 12 years, against New Zealand. Currently trailing 1-2 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, India faces the possibility of missing out on the WTC 2025 Final if they lose the final Test in Sydney.

Gautam Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach, has faced mounting pressure amid these setbacks, with speculation growing over his future. Reports say that Gambhir was not the Indian Cricket Board’s first choice for the position.

According to a PTI report, VVS Laxman, the legendary India batter and current head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), was the BCCI's first choice to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach. The BCCI also reached out to some famous overseas coaches, but they were not interested in coaching all three formats. As a result, Gautam Gambhir was appointed as a compromise. A BCCI source, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Gambhir was never the first choice and that other factors also played a role in his appointment.

Also, Gautam Gambhir's position as head coach of the Indian cricket team is under threat. The BCCI may decide his future based on the team's performance after the Sydney Test and the Champions Trophy 2025.

A BCCI source mentioned, "There is a Test match to be played and then the Champions Trophy. If the performance doesn’t improve, even Gautam Gambhir’s position could be at risk." It is also reported that Gambhir is not in sync with many players in the team. His communication skills are being questioned, with comparisons being drawn to former coaches like Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, who were known for their strong rapport with the players.
