PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal named India’s flag bearers for Paris Olympics opening ceremony

 In 2020, the IOC allowed one woman and one man to bear the nation’s flag during the Olympics opening ceremony if that country agrees to such a move.

Renowned badminton star PV Sindhu and celebrated table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal have been chosen to bear the Indian flag during the ceremonial parade of the next Paris Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in March appointed Kamal as its flag bearer but delayed the selection of the female athlete who will be carrying the Indian flag.

The president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Dr . PT Usha said “I am delighted to announce that India’s only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, as the female Flag-bearer alongside Table Tennis ace A. Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony.” She further added  “I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

Now over 100 athletes are already assured of their places in the Paris Games that start on July 26. Gagan Narang the four-time Olympian and men’s 10m Air Rifle bronze medalist of the London 2012 Olympics got the position of the chef-de-mission of the Indian contingent in the Paris 2024 Olympics replacing Mary Kom.

Gagan Narang’s Role Transition

IOA president Dr.PT Usha stated that Gagan Narang’s promotion from deputy CDM to the Chef-de-Mission role was a natural decision following Mary Kom’s resignation.In a press release she stated “I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom.”
