India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, marking the 100th anniversary of the global sporting event. The announcement was made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday (October 16).
“India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, a proud moment for Bharat and Gujarat,” Jaishankar wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He added, “It is a testament to PM Narendra Modi’s vision of world-class infrastructure and nurturing sporting talent.”
The confirmation follows a recommendation by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board, which had shortlisted Ahmedabad along with Nigeria’s Abuja. The city has been preparing for such large-scale events, having already hosted the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships earlier this year.
The upcoming Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, home to the world’s largest cricket ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium, will serve as the main venue. The complex will also include an aquatics centre, a football stadium, and multiple indoor arenas to host different sports.
A historic milestone, 100 years of the Games
The 2030 edition will be special, as it celebrates 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
In contrast, the 2026 Games in Glasgow are being scaled down to just ten sports due to budget limits of around ₹1,300 crore. Popular events like wrestling, shooting, badminton, and hockey have been dropped from that edition.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has said that the 2030 Games will bring back all major sports. IOA Joint Secretary Kalyan Chaubey said after a meeting in August, “The plan is to have all our medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling, etc. Our traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho should also be there.”
India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, which cost nearly ₹70,000 crore, much higher than the original estimate of ₹1,600 crore.
