India’s unbeaten streak in the ICC Champions Trophy continued as Rohit Sharma’s men secured a thrilling victory over New Zealand in the final on Sunday. With this win, India lifted the prestigious trophy for the third time, having won twice outright and sharing it once. Rohit led from the front, finishing as the top run-scorer for his team and steering India to a 4-wicket victory at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The victory earned India a handsome INR 20 crore ($2.24 million) cash prize from the International Cricket Council (ICC). But notably, this amount is still lesser than the INR 27 crore ($3 million) earned by wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as the highest-priced player in the IPL 2025 auction by the Lucknow Super Giants. Interestingly, Pant did not appear in a single game of the tournament.
New Zealand received INR 9.72 crore ($1.12 million) as prize money for the runners-up spot in the tournament while India, the winners, were busy rejoicing. New Zealand played valiantly, but India held their nerves in the pressure game and emerged winners.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) commended the team for their outstanding performance and will most likely announce further rewards for the players. The BCCI praised the team's bold and disciplined style during the tournament, praising them for their skills in playing under pressure.
"From the very outset, the team pursued excellence, overcoming formidable challenges with a brand of cricket that was both fearless and disciplined. Their unbeaten run in an ICC tournament is a true reflection of their consistency, strategic execution, and hunger to succeed on the global stage. The final against New Zealand was the perfect culmination of this journey - an exhibition of resilience and high-pressure mastery," read the BCCI’s statement.
BCCI Head Roger Binny described the achievement as a record-breaking one after India had recently won the T20 World Cup.
"This triumph is a landmark moment for Indian cricket, following the high of last year's T20 World Cup success. To dominate yet another global tournament and bring home the Champions Trophy is a phenomenal achievement. The team has played with unparalleled consistency and character, and I congratulate captain Rohit Sharma, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, and the entire squad for their historic success," Binny stated.
