India has made its position clear on sporting ties with Pakistan. The government has said that there will be no bilateral matches between the two countries, either in India or Pakistan. This means Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan, and Pakistani teams will not be invited to India for standalone series.
A statement from the Sports Ministry said, "India's approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country. So far as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India."
Multinational events will continue
However, the government clarified that Indian players will still take part in multinational tournaments, where Pakistan is also a participant. For example, the Indian cricket team will play against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup.
The statement added, "With regard to international and multilateral events, in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of our own sportspersons... Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India."
India as global sports hub
The government also pointed out India’s growing reputation as a reliable venue for major global tournaments. To support this, it announced easier visa rules for sportspersons, team officials, and members of international sports bodies.
"To position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sporting events, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified," the statement said.
It further explained that office-bearers of international sports bodies would be given multi-entry visas valid for up to five years, making it easier for them to attend events in India.
"Due protocol and courtesies, as per established practice, shall be extended to the Heads of International Sports Governing Bodies during their visits to India," the ministry added.
