The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an incredible sum of Rs 125 crore for the Indian cricket team following their victory in the recent ICC Cricket World Cup, ending a 11 year long wait for an ICC trophy for India.

BCCI General Secretary Jay Shah announced the news on X. “I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. In the past, after India’s victory at the 1983 World Cup, Dilip Vengsarkar remembers the sum of Rs 25,000 being awarded per player. Compared to that, the current division shows how far we’ve come in terms of financial prowess and rewards.

Virat Kohli, team India’s star batter, played a crucial role in the victory and has since announced his retirement from the sport. He scored 76 off 59 balls, giving India a total of 176 runs for seven wickets—which could not be reached by South Africa’s 169 for eight wickets. Hardik Pandy, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh’s were critical players from the Indian bowlers.

Memorable Moments from the World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav caught a ball on the boundary line, preventing a sixer as well. Roger Binny, the current BCCI president, claims Surya’s catch to be as good as Kapil Dev’s catch that dismissed Viv Richards in the 1983 World Cup—one of the greatest catches in Indian history.

“Kapil’s catch was magnificent in its own right. He had to run back keep an eye on the ball and complete the catch, which he did with great ease. This was a case of incredible athleticism, where Surya was dealing with the variable of the boundary rope. We would have probably lost if he had dropped it, just as it was with Kapil’s catch. These two catches are on a par,” Binny said at the Kensington Oval.

Kohli has been awarded the title Player of the Match, with a cash prize of $3000. Bumrah has been awarded Player of the tournament, with a cash prize of $15000 and Suryakumar Yadav has been awarded Smart Catch of the Match, with a cash prize of $3000.
