Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic to win the Wimbledon final on Sunday. The Spanish maestro gave an exceptional performance to defend his Wimbledon titles. It was a rematch of last Wimbledon, and Djokovic had a chance to turn the table, but the 21-year-old Alcaraz outclassed the Serbian legend winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) on a packed centre court.
With this victory, the Spanish youngster achieved the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in the same year and became the sixth player to do so, joining the group of legends like Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Djokovic who have previously achieved this milestone.
"It’s a huge honour for me to be part of those players who have achieved the Roland Garros – Wimbledon (double) in the same year. I’m really glad to be at the same table as those huge champions … I don’t consider myself a champion yet, not like them, but I try to keep going, building my path, my journey. It’s a huge honour for me,” he asserted during his on-court interview.
He has won four grand slams at the age of 21, which is the most by any player at his age. He launched his triumph in the 2022 US Open, winning his first grand slam as a teenager.
Alcaraz is the first and only Spanish player to defend the Wimbledon title, an achievement that even the legend Rafael Nadal doesn't have.
Alcaraz's Road to Victory Over Djokovic
Alcaraz dominated the first set winning it by 6-2. The Spaniard served beautifully, overshadowing his faults at the semis. The first set lasted for 27 minutes. Alcaraz continued his dominance in the second set winning it by 6-2. His 108 mph serves overpowered his opponent despite his efforts. Djokovic had no answers for the aggressive game of the Spanish youngster.
Alcaraz went roaring for the third set and clinched the title in a tense final set tie-breaker. The Spaniard showed composure in the dying moments of the game, winning the Wimbledon 2024 grand slam. Despite Djokovic's comeback in the third set, the Spaniard managed to clinch the victory.
37-year-old Serbian legend was eyeing to win the record eight Wimbledon titles equalling the record of Roger Federer, but he will now have to wait. Djokovic struggled throughout the game despite his comeback in the last set. The Knee surgery in June affected his performance in the Wimbledon.
