Tesla CEO Elon Musk, during a recent interview, said that he would reverse Twitter's ban on former US President Donald Trump, while speaking at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference.
This tentative plan to reinstate Trump has sparked a huge controversy as his account was permanently suspended in 2021 after the January 6 riot in US Capitol for his 'involvement' in inciting the violence.
Speaking at a Financial Times automotive conference Tuesday, Musk said the ban on the 45th US president was a “morally bad decision” and “flat-out wrong”. He continued that banning the Republican politician on the platform “was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the county and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice,” as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
As Musk started drawing flak for his remark to overturn the decision, Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey came out in his support. Echoing Musk’s sentiments, he also tweeted, “Generally permanent bans are a failure of ours and don’t work”.
Though Jack Dorsey was the CEO when Twitter permanently suspended Donald Trump's account, Jack Dorsey said he agrees with Elon Musk. "It was a business decision, it shouldn't have been. and we should always revisit our decisions and evolve as necessary. I stated in that thread and still believe that permanent bans of individuals are directionally wrong," Jack Dorsey said clarifying.
"As I said in the thread, we made the decision based on the information we had and what we thought best. impossible situation. I'm saying a corporation should not have to make this decision in the first place. not for something as important as public conversation," Jack Dorsey explained.
After Twitter and several other social media platforms put a ban on Trump, he and his team launched a Twitter alternative called Truth Social. In one of the recent interviews, Trump said, "I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH." There was no immediate comment from a Trump spokesperson.
