YouTube, one of the most popular video streaming services, is working on a solution to end the frustration of endless scrolling. According to 9to5Google, the platform is testing a new floating action button labeled "Play something" to make video selection easier and faster.
What is the "Play Something" button?
The "Play something" button is made to pop out right above the bottom bar of the YouTube app. It comes in a black background and white text. When pressed, the button plays something in the Shorts player. Now, an interesting feature here is that it supports normal content as well, albeit only in portrait mode, in which like, dislike, comment, and share buttons come along on the right-hand side of the screen, and at the bottom lies a timeline scrubber.
The functionality is, however, less accessible when the mini-player is active, as it disappears altogether.
Has YouTube ever tried this feature before?
This isn't YouTube's first attempt at this kind of feature. Back in 2023, a Reddit user noted a banner reading, "Can't decide what to watch?" alongside a similar "Play something" button at the bottom of the screen.
When will this be available?
It is still unknown if or when YouTube will roll out this feature to all users. The company is seemingly testing its effectiveness before implementing it.
YouTube has been pretty busy recently introducing a whole series of updates to improve the experience of its users. New features that have been launched so far include customizable thumbnails for playlists, sleep timers, and a redesigned mini-player, all of which are said to make the platform much more user-friendly and engaging.
