Seventeen-year-old powerlifting sensation Yashtika Acharya, the gold medal winner in Junior National Games, lost her life in a heart-breaking gym accident in Bikaner, Rajasthan. She died while working out as a 270-kg weightlifting rod fell on her neck and caused fatal injuries.

Based on accounts from police and eyewitnesses, Yashtika was hoisting the heavy bar under the observation of her trainer when the weight suddenly slipped away from her hold. The unanticipated blow smashed her neck and left her with critical injuries. Her trainer, who was trying to help her, sustained light injuries as well.

After the accident, Yashtika was taken to the hospital straight away. But doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival, citing the severity of her injuries.

Videos of the accident, which went viral on social media, have triggered debates regarding safety protocols in weightlifting training and whether young athletes are given proper protection during high-risk training.
