For 40 years, Dinesh Swaroop Brahmachari, called ‘Chai Wala Baba,’ has been helping students prepare for civil service exams for free. He used to sell tea in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, but now spends his time guiding students.
What makes him special is his vow of silence and his unique way of living. He doesn’t eat solid food and only drinks 10 cups of tea daily.
Baba shares his lessons and answers students’ questions mainly through WhatsApp. Even though he doesn’t speak, he communicates easily using written messages or gestures.
One of his students, Rajesh Singh, a civil service aspirant, said, “I have been associated with Maharaj Ji for almost four to five years now. We are his disciples. From time to time, he guides us whenever we need his assistance."
Singh further explained how Baba’s silence does not hinder communication. “Language requires a medium, which can be written or oral, and no one calls it non-verbal. Guruji is silent, but we understand through his gestures and WhatsApp messages. Regarding our queries, we can write them to him, and he responds in writing. We don’t believe that the written medium is the best, but it serves its purpose," he added.
Baba’s decision to remain silent is driven by a purpose. According to Singh, “It helps him conserve energy, which he then uses for the welfare of others.” Baba’s ultimate goal is to support aspirants in their journey to succeed in civil service exams.
Baba is currently attending the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, but his guidance to students continues uninterrupted. He remains committed to providing free study notes and answering questions.
Maha Kumbh: A historic gathering
The Maha Kumbh, the world’s biggest religious event, is happening in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26 this year. People from all over are coming to the Triveni Sangam, where three rivers—Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—meet. They believe taking a dip here will purify their soul.
This event has its origins in a Hindu story called Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean. During a fight between gods and demons over Amrit, the nectar of immortality, four drops of it fell on Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. These places became holy because of this.
As thousands gather at the Kumbh, Baba’s selfless work to guide students continues to inspire many.
