A team of researchers has found the world’s largest underground thermal lake inside a cave in southern Albania’s Vromoner region, marking a groundbreaking achievement in geological exploration. Named Lake Neuron, this vast water body was officially measured and confirmed in 2024, following years of investigation.

The lakewas first spotted in 2021 by scientists from the Czech Republic. But, at the time, they lacked the necessary equipment to assess its full scale. In 2024, the team returned with advanced 3D scanners, allowing them to confirm that Lake Neuron is the largest underground thermal lake ever recorded.

The lake stretches 138.3 meters in length, and 42 metres in width, and has a circumference of 345 metres. It holds an estimated 8,335 cubic meters of thermal mineral water, making it an extraordinary natural wonder.

The discovery was led by Marek Audy, head of the Neuron Atmos Expedition. He described the moment they found a deep abyss within the limestone massif, from which a high column of steam was emerging.

"According to the high column of steam emerging from the limestone massif, we managed to find an abyss over a hundred meters deep. We called it Atmos," Audy explained.

“At the bottom, we discovered a strong thermal inflow and a vast lake. For Czech science to present this phenomenal discovery, it was necessary to conduct scientific research and precise measurements," he added.

Extensive research has confirmed the uniqueness of Lake Neuron. The dome covering the lake is three times larger than the main hall of the National Theatre in Prague, adding to the site’s geological importance.

Monika Řasa Vondráková, Director and Co-Founder of the Neuron Foundation, which supported the research, showed pride in the team’s achievement.

"I am extremely proud that we were able to support Czech scientists in such a groundbreaking project," she said.

"This success demonstrates how crucial it is to support scientists directly in the field, where they can bring completely new knowledge thanks to their knowledge and commitment. Expeditions like this are crucial for the development of science and deepening our understanding of the world around us," she added.
