Octopuses could be aliens from another planet, according to a paper published in the scientific journal Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology. A team of 33 authors led by Australian molecular immunologist Edward J. Steele said that octopuses and squid may have arrived on the planet by falling from space.

The paper highlights how life on Earth may have begun due to cosmic rain of retroviruses that fell from space. These retroviruses added new DNA sequences to Earth's terrestrial genomes. What happened next drove mutagenic changes on Earth.

“The possibility that cryopreserved squid and/or octopus eggs, arrived in icy bolides several hundred million years ago should not be discounted,” the paper said. It added that the octopus has biological features that appear to suggest “some type of pre-existence”.

Panspermia, the argument that life was 'brought' to Earth by celestial bodies like comets also has solid interest in the scientific community.

In our search for life in space, we often look for presence of water. A comet contains ice. It is therefore, at least in theory, held to be acceptable to propose that life forms like microbes were carried through space in comets and brought to Earth.
