Trump’s controversial remarks on Kamala Harris ignite political firestorm

Following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the campaign, Harris is the Democratic Party nominee.

During a visit to the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago on Wednesday, former President Donald Trump stirred up controversy with what many are calling Trump’s Controversial Remarks. During his speech, Trump implied that Vice President Kamala Harris had chosen to “turn Black” for political reasons, sparking significant backlash and criticism from various quarters.

The statement was made by Trump in response to a query over the propriety of some Republicans referring to Kamala Harris as a “DEI hire,” a term used to describe workplace practices that support “diversity, equity, and inclusion.” He said, “She was Indian all way, then all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a Black person.”

Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign, Kamala Harris is the presumed Democratic Party nominee. Harris has always identified as both Black and Indian American. She was a member of the historically Black Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and attended Howard University, a historically Black college.

Trump also got into a furious argument with the moderators during the panel discussion, labelling ABC News as “fake” and “terrible” and attacking Rachel Scott’s question about why Black people should trust him as “nasty.” Additionally, he made an effort to elucidate remarks he made earlier in the June presidential debate, in which he said that immigrants were entering the country and stealing “Black jobs.”

Given Trump’s tendency to have cordial conversations with conservative media professionals, this was one of the more unusual events of the current presidential campaign. But he faced three Black woman moderators, so he knew that the panel in Chicago would be difficult.

Trump declared himself “the best president for the Black population” since Abraham Lincoln, despite the controversy. Additionally, he debated the merits of diversity, equity, and inclusion measures with reporters and repeated several falsehoods about immigration.

Trump’s remarks on Twitter ( now X) prompted Vice President Harris to respond, branding them “the same old show” and declaring, “I won’t be distracted by the noise.” She is unwaveringly committed to her campaign and the causes that the American people care about most.
