The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to conduct a nationwide caste-based census. The resolution, led by Chief Minister M K Stalin, emphasized the necessity of this census for formulating inclusive policies.

Chief Minister Stalin called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government to initiate the long-overdue 2021 census along with the caste census. The Assembly highlighted that understanding the caste-based population is crucial for ensuring equal rights and opportunities in education, economy, and employment for every Indian citizen.

Interestingly, the resolution saw support from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in Tamil Nadu, despite the party's national stance against caste-based census. This mirrors the situation in Bihar, where the state BJP unit supports the caste census, with Bihar BJP president Samrat Choudhary pledging to approach the Supreme Court against the Patna High Court's decision on increased reservation.

However, the main opposition party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), was absent from the House due to a suspension over disrupting proceedings.

Speaker M Appavu confirmed that the resolution was adopted unanimously, as reported by the Economic Times.
