On Monday, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) welcomed the proposal for a caste census, emphasising that it should be taken seriously rather than used for electoral or other goals. Sunil Ambekar, the RSS's chief spokesperson, stated, "In our Hindu society, we have the sensitive issue of caste and caste relations." Of sure, it is a critical issue for our national unity and integrity. It should be taken very seriously, without regard to electioneering, election processes, or politics." He noted that, while the government may need correct caste data to better serve these communities, the RSS believes this practice should be undertaken with caution.

“RSS believes that while government may need precise caste numbers to effectively address the welfare of these communities, this practice, though previously implemented, should be handled with care. The focus should remain on genuine upliftment and support rather than being manipulated for political advantage,” he said.

He emphasised the risks of utilising caste data irresponsibly, saying, "This caution is crucial to ensure that caste issues are treated with the seriousness they deserve, without reducing them to mere elements of electoral strategy."

Congress's Advocacy for Caste Census

Meanwhile, the Congress party has actively advocated for a caste census, which is included in its Lok Sabha election agenda. The party promised to perform a nationwide socio-economic and caste census to identify castes, sub-castes, and their socioeconomic status. Congress additionally pledged to campaign for a constitutional amendment that would boost the 50% reservation cap for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Regarding the Supreme Court's request to exclude the creamy layer from reserves, the RSS emphasised its unwavering support for constitutional reservation while acknowledging that the court's concerns are delicate.

"The RSS continues to work to promote Hindu unity, and by extension, national unity and integrity." "The organisation strongly supports the values enshrined in the Constitution, particularly those of justice, equality, and fraternity, which are critical to ensuring national cohesion," he stated.

Fraternity is critical in the context of national integrity, and the RSS emphasises the role of constitutional reservations in ensuring social balance. Ambekar went on to say that the RSS has always supported the reservation system as a measure to overcome past inequities and promote diversity.
