Rahul Gandhi, the crown prince of Congress and Wayanad Member of Parliament (MP), will run for the Lok Sabha in 2024 from the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh, the stronghold of the Nehru-Gandhi family from where his mother and ex-Congress President, Sonia Gandhi fought before finally not choosing to contest this year.
The Gandhi family loyalist and probably a puppet Kishori Lal Sharma has been fielded from Amethi, the seat that Rahul lost to Union Minister Smriti Irani in the 2019 election.
On May 3, the deadline for submitting nominations for the two seats, the Congress party disclosed the names of the candidates, putting an end to the weeks-long conjecture on the party's choice for the two seats.
On May 20, Raebareli and Amethi will participate in the Lok Sabha Elections' fifth phase. Rahul has already declared for the Lok Sabha elections, using the Wayanad seat he won in Kerala in 2019. On April 26, Wayanad held its second phase of elections.
Dinesh Pratap Singh, a minister in Uttar Pradesh, was declared the BJP's candidate from Raebareli on May 2. In the Lok Sabha elections of 2019, Singh was defeated by Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi, the winner of the Raebareli constituency since 2004, made the decision to withdraw from the Lok Sabha election in 2024. She is a member of the Rajya Sabha now.
During their nomination submission today, Rahul and Sharma will be joined by prominent members of Congress. As Sonia constituency representative in Raibareli, Sharma has long been a devoted member of the Gandhi family.
The party began preparing for the nomination submission in both seats—which have historically been controlled by members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—even before the official announcement.
Kishori Lal Sharma vs. Smriti Irani
Kishori Lal Sharma, a devoted member of the Congress party, is originally from Ludhiana, Punjab. Sharma first became involved with the Congress party in 1983, when he moved from Punjab and began working for Rajiv Gandhi.
Later on, he collaborated with Sonia Gandhi in her role as constituency coordinator for Amethi, which she ran for in 1999. Sharma later served as the Raebareli seat's supervisor.
Before Rahul Gandhi lost the Amethi seat to Union Minister Smriti Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had been winning the Raebareli and Amethi seats since 1999. Since 2004, Rahul has been the Amethi winner.
Irani from Amethi has once again been fielded by the BJP after having defeated Rahul Gandhi the last time.
