One shot dead, two injured in post-poll violence in Bihar’s Saran

The incident unfolded after the conclusion of voting in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Rohini Acharya, the RJD candidate for Saran and daughter of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, arrived at a polling booth in Chapra city on Monday evening. However, her presence sparked tension among the locals, who accused her of booth raiding. Allegations surfaced that Acharya and her supporters had behaved improperly with voters at the polling station, causing a chaotic situation.

The dispute escalated on Tuesday, resulting in a violent confrontation between the RJD and BJP workers. In a shocking turn of events, both parties opened fire on each other. One person tragically died from gunshot wounds, while two others were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Immediate Response and Internet Suspension

Following the incident, authorities swiftly intervened. A significant number of police personnel were deployed near Bhikhari Thakur Chowk in Chapra. The Superintendent of Police (SP) and the District Magistrate also reached at the spot to maintain order and investigate the situation. Saran SP Gaurav Mangla confirmed that action had been taken against those responsible for instigating the violence. As a precautionary measure, internet access was suspended in the area for two days.

Saran was one of the five Lok Sabha seats in Bihar that went to polls on Monday. The voter turnout in these constituencies was closely watched, reflecting the electorate’s engagement and participation. In Saran, the voter turnout was 50.46%, while the overall turnout across the five seats was 52.35%.

Rohini Acharya, representing the RJD, faced off against Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the two-term sitting BJP MP and former Union Minister. Their electoral battle in Saran garnered attention from voters and political observers alike, making the clash even more significant in the context of the ongoing elections.
