Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Washington DC early Thursday (IST) for a high-profile two-day visit. This is one of the first top-level interactions between India and the United States after Donald Trump resumed office as the 47th President of the US.
On arrival, PM Modi was greeted by Tulsi Gabbard, the newly-nominated US Director of National Intelligence. He offered his congratulations on her appointment and held talks focused on strengthening India-US relations in strategic areas.
Bilateral meetings and high-level dialogues
In his 36-hour visit, PM Modi will hold a series of bilateral talks, the highlight of which will be his meeting with President Trump at the White House. The meeting will take place in two ways: a restricted meeting and then a delegation-level talk.
Before meeting PM Modi, President Trump has already met with other important world leaders, such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan's King Abdullah. Modi has at least six bilateral meetings scheduled, which shows the importance of this visit.
The Indian leader is currently residing at Blair House, the official guest house for visiting dignitaries, which is located just across from the White House.
Key focus areas in Modi-Trump discussions
Modi and Trump's much-awaited meeting is scheduled to take place at 4 PM IST on Thursday at the White House. There are some key issues that are likely to feature on the agenda, such as trade reforms, lowering import tariffs, broadening energy cooperation, and increasing US defense equipment imports by India.
With the changing geopolitical scenario, these discussions are poised to play an important role in shaping the future of India-US ties, particularly in trade and security matters.
