According to a report by PTI, different Maratha outfits on Monday staged a protest in Baramati city in the Pune district of Maharashtra against the police lathi-charge on quota protesters in Jalna and demanded that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar quit the Shiv Sena-BJP government.

Maratha groups in Baramati raised slogans asking for the resignation of the NCP MLA and deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. BJP politician and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, who is in charge of the Home Department, was the target of other taunts.

In Pune city, opposition Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar group), and Congress took to the streets in the Kothrud area and warned the government not to test the patience of the Maratha community.

 "Fadnavis, who is deputy chief minister in the Eknath Shinde-led government, has failed to make any efforts for Maratha reservation over the last year. Do not test the patience of Marathas," said Ankush Kakade, who belongs to the Sharad Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party, during the agitation in Pune city.

He said that the state administration had given the police orders to put down the Maratha uprising in the Jalna district.

Local leaders of Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) also joined the agitation.

Confrontation between protesters and police

Antarwali Sarathi village in the Jalna district experienced a violent mob on Friday when demonstrators allegedly refused to allow authorities to move a man who was on a hunger strike for the Maratha quota to the hospital. Police baton charged the area and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Several persons. including 40 police personnel, were injured and more than 15 state transport buses were set ablaze in violence.

In May 2021, the Supreme Court overturned the Maharashtra government's decision to grant the Maratha community reservations in employment and education in 2018 when Fadnavis was the chief minister, citing among other reasons the 50 per cent cap on total reservations.
