West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee threatens to retaliate if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tries to stir up trouble in her state. In a bold statement, Mamata Banerjee warned that if the BJP attempts to "light a fire" in West Bengal, she will not spare Assam, Bihar, Manipur, or even the capital Delhi. This stern warning was aimed directly at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has elicited strong reactions from BJP political leaders. Mamata Banerjee's threats underscore the heightened political tensions and the ongoing battle between the West Bengal government and the BJP.
The Chief Minister's statement comes at a time when the state has been engulfed in protests by doctors, the general public, and BJP workers following the rape and murder of a young doctor from the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The BJP has alleged that the West Bengal government botched the investigation in the case to protect some of its aides involved.
Mamata Banerjee Threatens to Expand Conflict Beyond Bengal
“Some people think it is Bangladesh." I love Bangladesh; its culture and food are the same as ours. But Bangladesh is a separate country, and India is a separate country," Mamata said in a public address. "Modi Babu, you want this fire to spread in Bengal. So you have to understand that if a fire breaks out in Bengal, Assam will not be spared, Bihar will not be spared, and it will not be stopped in Manipur or Odisha. It will also reach Delhi. We will look for your chair.
In response, state BJP leader and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar wrote a letter to home minister Amit Shah, accusing Mamata of making "anti-national" statements and asking the government to act. "It is unthinkable and unprecedented that a prime minister who is constitutionally bound to rise above party lines would make such intimidating statements that pose a threat to democracy," Majumdar said.
After Mamata's comments became a new controversy, the West Bengal chief minister issued a statement on Thursday. "Let me be very clear that I have not said a single word against (the doctor, etc.) of the students or their movements. I fully support this movement. His movement is authentic. I never threatened them, as some accuse me. This statement is completely false,” he added. Mamata said she denounced the BJP in her speech because it was threatening democracy in West Bengal.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has been on the defensive ever since the gruesome details of the crime came to light. The apathy of the Calcutta Police in handling the case was also exposed during a hearing in the Supreme Court, where the bench, headed by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, consulted the authorities. "The entire procedure followed by your state is something I have not come across in my 30 years of life," Judge Pardiwala said during the hearing. The court termed the Kolkata Police's delay in registering the case of unnatural death in the rape and murder of the qualified doctor as "extremely disturbing."
