On December 24, 2024, a controversial video released by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a known Khalistani terrorist, has created a stir. In the video, Pannun, a member of the banned organization Sikhs For Justice (SJF), threatened to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2025. The Kumbh Mela, an important Hindu religious event, will be held in Prayagraj next year.
Pannun’s threats of revenge
In the video, Pannun claimed that his organization would take "revenge" for the killing of three Khalistani terrorists in an alleged fake encounter by Indian security forces. He stated, "This Hindutva terrorist state has killed three Sikh youth in a fake encounter." The three men, Gurvinder Singh (25), Virender Singh alias Ravi (23), and Jaspreet Singh alias Pratap Singh (18), were members of the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), a pro-Khalistani group. The encounter took place in Pilibhit district, Uttar Pradesh, where the three terrorists were shot dead after reportedly firing at the police.
Pannun further threatened that his organization would attack during the Shahi Snan dates of the Kumbh Mela, which are set for January 14, January 29, and February 3, 2025. He warned that PM Modi and CM Yogi would be in Prayagraj on these dates, and Sikhs For Justice would "shake the foundation" of "Hindutva terrorism." He went on to declare that these dates would mark the "last Maha Kumbh" for the two leaders.
Legal action against Pannun
The Pilibhit Police have taken the threat seriously and noted the details. Legal proceedings are already underway against Pannun, who is currently believed to be abroad. Meanwhile, the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh police continue to maintain strict security measures in light of these threats.
