The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, informed the Punjab & Haryana High Court on Friday that they have helped Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh, the leader of 'Waris Punjab De' who is currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA), to submit his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.
According to Live Law, Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh , who is currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA), had petitioned the high court. He sought instructions for the Punjab government, Centre, and Election Commission to either allow him a seven-day release or make arrangements for him to submit his nomination form for contesting the 2024 elections in the Sri Khadoor Sahib Constituency.
Based on the report Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj mentioned that since the requests mentioned in the petition had already been met, the petition would no longer be relevant or effective, using the term "infructuous."
Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh filled out and signed two sets of nomination forms and other necessary documents on May 9. Additionally, he was granted permission to meet his proposer and Advocate at Dibrugarh Central Jail, as informed by DAG Punjab Arjun Sheoran to the Court.
Sheoran informed the court that “Two sets of nomination forms and other paperwork were filled in and signed by the detenue on 09.05.2024. The detenue was allowed to meet his proposer and Advocate at Dibrugarh Central Jail on 09.05.2024.” Sheoran further added “The Superintendent Central Jail Dibrugarh will administer the oath to the detenue as per the provisions of law including Handbook for Candidate, 2023 and issue Certificate for Receipt of Oath and send original form of Oath to Returning Officer, 03- Khadoor Sahab, (Punjab). The oath will be administered as and when a request is made by the detenue after his nomination form is submitted before the Returning Officer.”
Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh, the leader of "Waris Punjab De" and a separatist, intends to run as an independent candidate for the Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab. This constituency is scheduled for polling on June 1, marking the final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Amritpal Singh, who modeled himself after the deceased Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23 of the previous year after an extensive search. Prior to this, there was a confrontation at Ajnala on February 23 of the same year, where Khalistani Leader Amritpal Singh and his supporters clashed with the police.
As a result of this incident, he was charged with several criminal offenses, including attempted murder and causing public disorder.The Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, renowned as a 'Panthic' seat, comprises nine assembly constituencies. The Shiromani Akali Dal, Aam Aadmi Party, and BJP have all put forth their respective candidates, whereas the Congress has chosen Kulbir Singh Zira as their nominee. In a turn of events, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) decided to endorse Amritpal Singh's candidacy for the Khadoor Sahib seat, leading to the withdrawal of their own candidate from the constituency.
