Pandit Vishnu Rajoria, the head of a Madhya Pradesh board and a minister-level official, made a statement that has led to much discussion. He announced a Rs. 1 lakh reward for Brahmin couples who decide to have four children.
At an event in Indore, Mr. Rajoria urged young couples to have bigger families, saying people are not paying enough attention to family growth. He expressed concern about the rising number of "heretics" and stated, "We have largely stopped focusing on our families. Youngsters get settled and stop after one child. This is very problematic. I urge you to have at least four." He also promised that the Parshuram board would give the announced Rs. 1 lakh reward, saying, "Whether or not I am the board president, the award will be given."
Addressing concerns about education costs
Mr. Rajoria acknowledged concerns about the rising cost of education but urged couples to "manage somehow." He warned, "Otherwise, heretics will capture this country."
Later, Mr. Rajoria clarified to NDTV that his announcement was a personal initiative, not a government directive. "This is my social statement, made in a community program. The Brahmin society can fulfil these commitments, including education and training for the children for higher positions," he explained.
Mixed reactions to the statement
Congress leader Mukesh Nayak urged Mr. Rajoria to rethink his remarks. He said, "Population growth is among the world's big problems today. The fewer the children, the easier it would be to ensure their education. Our country will be powerful only when we are united."
Meanwhile, the BJP distanced itself from the announcement. A party spokesperson clarified, "The government believes this matter is a decision of parents. The party has nothing to do with this." The statement has sparked discussions on population growth and its societal implications.
