The election results from Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir are still in progress. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is securing a strong victory in Haryana, while the National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance is taking the lead in Jammu and Kashmir. As the counting continues, questions arise about what went wrong for the Congress Party in Haryana and how the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir is reshaping.

Haryana assembly election results

The Haryana Assembly elections were held on 5 October 2024, with the results declared on 8 October 2024. The BJP won a clear victory with 50 seats out of 90, securing a third consecutive term in the state. The Congress Party, even though there were strong hopes for a comeback, only managed to win 34 seats, falling far short of expectations. Other parties, such as the INLD, BSP, and independents, claimed 2, 1, and 3 seats.

One of the notable winners is wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat, who wins the Julana assembly constituency by a margin of 6,015 votes. Phogat’s victory marks an important political shift, with sports personalities now making their mark in Haryana’s politics.

Even though Congress was confident after a strong performance in the previous Lok Sabha elections, the party faced major setbacks. Questions about candidate selection and internal party conflicts have been raised. Congress's reliance on Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a prominent figure in the party, has also been questioned. The Congress now faces the challenge of reevaluating its electoral strategy after failing to make large gains.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election Results

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections were held from 18 September to 1 October 2024 in three phases, and the counting is still ongoing. These elections are important as they are the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, which granted the former state special status.

The NC-Congress alliance won a total of 47 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir elections, with the National Conference (NC) getting 40 seats and the Congress getting 6. This gives them a majority in the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Omar Abdullah, the Vice President of the NC, won his second seat in Ganderbal by 10,574 votes. His win, along with his party's success, has led people to believe he could become the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP, which has always been a key part in the region, won 27 seats, and the PDP secured three seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also made history by securing its first-ever seat in Jammu and Kashmir, winning in the Doda assembly constituency. This marks a new era in Jammu and Kashmir’s politics.

The results in Jammu and Kashmir not only reflect the changing political dynamics in the region but also raise questions about the future of the Union Territory. The NC-Congress alliance is now set to form the first elected government in the region since the removal of Article 370. This will be a major turning point in Jammu and Kashmir’s governance after years of central rule.

People are paying close attention to the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially as the region is set to have its first elected government in almost ten years. Now the question is: how will this affect the future of the region and its people?
