US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, emphasized the importance of the India-US relationship during his address at the United Services Institution (USI) in Delhi on Thursday. He highlighted the shared values and common goals that bind the two nations, suggesting that their partnership could become an "unstoppable force for good in the world."
Speaking amid ongoing global conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Israel-Gaza, Garcetti stressed the interconnected nature of today's world. "No war is distant anymore," he said, urging both nations to take concrete actions to ensure that those who violate peaceful norms cannot continue their aggressive actions unchecked.
Garcetti underlined the depth and historical significance of India-US ties, describing them as "deep, ancient, and increasingly broad." He called for a stronger defence partnership, envisioning a future where the two countries develop weapons and integrate their training together. This cooperation, he argued, would serve as a stabilizing force in times of crisis, whether natural or man-made.
The ambassador also noted that many other countries are hopeful about the success of the India-US relationship, seeing it as a potential counterbalance and a source of joint development. "We don't just see our future in India, and India doesn't just see its future with the US. The world can see great things in our relationship," Garcetti said.
The Historical Significance of India-US Ties
In his address, Garcetti referred to the historic state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US in June 2023, highlighting the continued enthusiasm and focus on strengthening bilateral ties. He described the essence of the relationship as "commitment," emphasizing that it is "true, trusting, tried, and tested."
Garcetti acknowledged that the relationship is not without challenges, mentioning concerns raised by US lawmakers about various issues, including human rights. However, he stressed the importance of confronting these issues and finding common ground. "Our heads and hearts are aligned, but the question is can the two countries move their feet together and build that continued deep trust," he said.
The ambassador highlighted the urgency of the moment, noting the rapid pace of change and the high stakes for technological innovation, climate action, and military cooperation. He described the US-India defense partnership as one of the most consequential in the world.
