FIR filed against Samajwadi MLA for remarks on Muslim population and political power

The Samajwadi Party has however distanced itself from Ali's views.

An FIR has been lodged against Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Mehboob Ali and the party’s Bijnor president, Shaikh Zakir Hussain, for allegedly making statements inciting religious enmity between Hindus and Muslims. The accusation, filed at Kotwali City Police Station, stems from Ali’s assertions that an increasing Muslim population would bring down India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration.

Ali reportedly warned that the expanding Muslim population would cause Hindus and the BJP to lose power, drawing comparisons to the Mughal Empire, which dominated India for 850 years. He also stated that his party would acquire power in future elections, implying that the Samajwadi Party could win the next 2027 Uttar Pradesh (UP) elections. “We will rise to power…” People have woken up and responded in the Parliamentary elections. “You will undoubtedly leave in 2027, and we will return,” he stated.

The BJP reacted harshly to Ali’s remarks. Subrat Pathak, a former MP and current UP BJP general secretary, blasted the SP, claiming that party president Akhilesh Yadav was dividing Hindus to further the Muslim community’s political objectives. Pathak complimented Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while questioning the SP’s objectives.

However, the Samajwadi Party has distanced itself from Ali’s views. SP spokesperson Sunil Sajan stated that the party does not anticipate the BJP would lose power just because of an increase in the Muslim population. Instead, Sajan said that rising inflation, unemployment, corruption, and hatred-fueled politics would all lead to the BJP’s demise. He also stated that a huge portion of the populace, not just Muslims, is keen to see the BJP ousted in future elections.

This incident has sparked political tensions as both parties prepare for upcoming elections, with the 2027 UP elections being a key battleground.
