BJP MP Kangana Ranaut expressed her regret today over her recent comments suggesting the reinstatement of the three Controversy overy on Farm Laws that fueled protests among farmers in 2020.  Addressing the reporters in her Lok Sabha constituency of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Ranaut said, "I know this will be controversial... but I feel the farm laws that were repealed should be brought back. The farmers themselves should demand it. They are a pillar of strength for the nation's development, and I want to appeal to them - demand the laws back for your own good."

The BJP promptly distanced itself from her statement after her comments. Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified, “Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of the BJP, and it doesn't depict the BJP's view on the farm bills." To this, Ranaut retorted that it's her personal opinion and in no way relates to the party. She then continued to say, “I regret and take my words back if my comments have disappointed anyone,” emphasising her dual role as an artist and a BJP member.

Opposition parties, such as Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have criticised the comments of Kangana Ranaut. The Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “More than 750 farmers were martyred... only then did the Modi government wake up and these black laws were withdrawn. Now BJP MPs are planning to bring them back... but Congress is with the farmers.” AAP's Balbir Singh mocked Ranaut over her understanding of farm laws and her comments as 'comedy'.

Another AAP MP, Malvinder Singh Kang also reacted to the suggestion stating “it is an insult to millions of farmers and the 750 martyred farmers in the country” He called upon PM Modi to take action against Ranaut if he sincerely respects the farmers.

Background of the controversy

This incident comes at a politically charged time, with the Assembly elections in Haryana approaching. Many farmers from the region had previously marched to Delhi to protest against the farm laws. Ranaut's latest remarks have rekindled discussions surrounding these contentious laws, which were repealed by the Modi government in November 2021 amid massive protests.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Ranaut's statements and the responses they provoke are likely to remain a focal point of debate in the lead-up to the elections.
