Speaking to students at Georgetown University in the United States, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi focused on caste inequality in Indian society and reiterated the need for a caste census, emphasizing the deep-rooted disparities within the Indian community.
When Gandhi was asked how long it would take them to abolish the reservations in that country, he replied, “It can only be abolished when India is a fair place, and India is not a fair place now.” As to the ‘symptom’, he said the OBCs get a similar amount of money as the dalits, five rupees out of a hundred, and the tribal people, ten paise. Referring to the issue of no participation, the Congress MP stated that, ‘This is a fact that they are not getting participation, they are unable to do so as 90 per cent of India cannot play.’
"Whenever they go through the list of every single business tycoon in India I have done that, I have gone through each one of them, show me the tribal name, show me the Dalit name, show me the OBC name Out of the top 200 I think there is one OBC," he said.
Gandhi also pointed out that one of the ways of tackling this issue is through reservation. He argued that the members of the general caste should not cry foul over their misfortune as a result of the reservation program. He said that none of them will ever be an Adani or an Ambani and that they simply cannot do that as those doors are very much shut and the general caste people should open those doors.
On the question of the motion for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the speaker, a Congress MP declined to comment. He once again targeted Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani to the extent that he opined that two businessmen should not be controlling all companies in India.
