Shashi Tharoor’s personal assistant, Shiv Prasad, was arrested by customs officials at Delhi’s IGI Airport for allegedly gold smuggling from Dubai. According to sources, Kumar was caught taking possession of gold brought by an associate and was detained on Wednesday at Terminal 3.
Customs officials seized the gold, valued at over Rs 30 lakh, and launched an investigation to determine its origin and authenticity. Kumar, who had just arrived from Dubai, was questioned about the gold's source and purpose. However, he failed to provide satisfactory answers or the necessary documentation, prompting further investigation.
Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, replied to the situation by stating that the arrested person was a former employee who provided part-time airport help.
Tharoor added that the 72-year-old retiree, who requires frequent dialysis, was retained on compassionate grounds.
Tharoor voiced his disbelief in a post on X and restated his support for the probe, underlining that he does not condone any alleged wrongdoings. He stated, "The law must take its own course."
Tharoor, who is now campaigning in Dharamshala, has told the authorities that he completely supports their attempts to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
