Aam Aadmi Party Punjab minister and AAP leader Balkar Singh provoked outrage on social media after he was spotted campaigning on the streets with AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the Punjab elections.
Opposition parties have accused Singh of sexually abusing a woman who was applying for a job by showing her his privates in a video. Singh is facing backlash over the video.
Singh was seen on May 28 participating in a road show with Kejriwal and AAP candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu from Jalandhar.
The seventh and final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will take place in Jalandhar on June 1.
AAP's Tinu is running for the seat, alongside candidates from the INDIA alliance (Charanjit Singh Channi), the NDA (Sushil Kumar Rinku), and Akali Dal (Mohinder Singh Kaypee).
Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, a Delhi BJP leader, posted Singh's video (blurred) on social media. According to him, Singh took advantage of a woman who applied for a job with him.
Afterwards, a number of BJP leaders and their followers shared the video.
Following the public release of both the video and the allegations, the National Commission for Women (NCW) took action.
Rekha Sharma, the chairman of the committee, posted on X (formerly Twitter) to say that she had instructed the director general of police in Punjab to guarantee a swift and unbiased inquiry and to provide a thorough report on the occurrence within three days.
The women's panel said, "The National Commission for Women is gravely disturbed by a Twitter post alleging misconduct by Punjab MLA Mr. Balkar Singh. The reported acts, if substantiated, constitute serious violations under IPC sections 354 and 354B, directly affronting a woman's dignity."
On social media, Singh’s participation in election campaign drew sharp reactions.
Bagga posted, “@ArvindKejriwal जी
