Over the past few weeks, a bunch of eminent leaders have made a series of irresponsible statements regarding the vaccine.

On 3 January 2021, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) gave approval to Bharat Biotech's Covaxin and Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for emergency restricted use, this kicked up a political storm in India.

It seems that any matter of achievement that benefits the nation has to be necessarily opposed by certain political groups, driven by their contempt for the Prime Minister and his government.

Akhilesh Yadav incepted a Conspiracy theory:

Akhilesh Yadav had termed the anti-Covid vaccine a "vaccine of the BJP" and said he will not take the shot.

"How can I trust the vaccine, which will be used for vaccination by the BJP? We cannot get vaccinated by the BJP's vaccine." He further said, “SP would come to power in the state after 2022 elections and everybody would get a vaccine for free.”

Shortly after Yadav’s remarks, Samajwadi Party leader Ashutosh Sinha went so far as to claim that the vaccine will lead to impotency, trying to raise questions on the scientific claims.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said that the emergency approval to Covid-19 vaccine–Covaxin was premature and could be dangerous as it is still under phase 3 trial and shortly after this, many leaders including the so called progressive Congressman and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh and Anand Sharma also engaged in similar rhetoric.

On the other hand, many Congress leaders, including chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and former union minister Ashwani Kumar, welcomed the approval given to the vaccines.

Busting claims of political party leaders, DCGI VG Somani said, "We'll never approve anything if there is slightest of safety concern. The vaccines are 110 per cent safe,", adding Covishield was found to be 70.42 per cent effective and Covaxin was "safe and provides a robust immune response.”

While Congress and SP leaders seem to be trying to discredit India’s efforts on the vaccines and plotting conspiracy theories around the same, world leaders have acclaimed the Indian government’s decision.

Clearly spelling it out in his interaction with the Chief Ministers, PM Modi warned about the rumors being spread about vaccines and vaccination and said that the Indian government has faith in the scientific community of India and is ready to roll out the mammoth vaccination drive.

Even the Health Minister as well as PM Modi had to intervene and suggest the people to not believe the rumors being spread by opposition to mislead citizens.
