A shameful instance from Ujjain caught the attention of the internet as a woman was raped on a busy Ujjain street. The video of the instance since has gone viral. Instead of intervening, the onlookers filmed the incident and posted it on social media. The viral video is from Wednesday, when the crime took place in the Koyla Phatak area, one of the busiest intersections in Ujjain. The culprit, identified as Lokesh, was arrested by the local police. The victim was identified through the viral video and was brought to the police station, where police recorded her statement and filled out an FIR based on it.

According to the police, the victim is a ragpicker. Lokesh met her in the area and lured her with marriage promises. The culprit somehow convinced the woman to accompany her and forcefully intoxicated her with alcohol. After the woman was high on alcohol, he raped her in a roadside shelter. Lokesh threatened the women and fled away from the crime scene. Later, he was arrested as police recognised him from the video.

Opposition's outburst

As the incident caught fire on the internet, the political blame game started. MP's Congress blamed the ruling BJP for compromising the state's law and order. Madhya Pradesh Congress posted the viral video on X, captioning, “Ujjain, the sacred city, is once again shamed. Those in power should either die of shame or resign.”

“Once again, the holy city of Ujjain is tarnished... Rapes are now happening in broad daylight in MP—on open streets. This is only possible when the law and government completely disappear. If this is the situation in the Chief Minister’s hometown, then one can imagine the condition of the rest of the state,” State Congress Chief Jitu Patwari wrote on X.
