With heavy rains, Delhi’s widespread waterlogging draws criticism against AAP govt

In the early hours of Friday, June 28, Delhi-NCR experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The heavy rainfall caused extensive waterlogging, flooding roads throughout the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi received an astonishing 228 mm of rainfall from 8:30 am yesterday to 8:30 am today. This sets a record for the highest 24-hour rainfall in June since 1936, when 235.5 mm of rain was recorded.
The impact of this unprecedented rainfall was felt throughout daily life in Delhi-NCR. Commuters faced severe waterlogged streets and traffic jams during their morning commute. Unfortunately, this deluge also exposed the shortcomings in the city’s infrastructure.
Despite assurances by Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on June 18 that the city was well-prepared for the monsoon, the first significant rain of the season has already caused substantial waterlogging. Oberoi had previously promised that storm drains were clean and ready, ensuring a hassle-free monsoon for Delhi residents, as reported by NDTV.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse. The Delhi BJP criticized both the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government, both of which are run by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva accused the AAP of misleading the public, stating, “The Aam Aadmi Party has only one goal: to lie and keep the public in the dark.” He further emphasized that warnings about waterlogging had been ignored, and the corrupt government failed to prioritize public welfare.
Sachdeva squarely placed responsibility on the AAP-led Kejriwal government for the deplorable condition of Delhi. As waterlogging persists with the onset of the monsoon, it is evident that further challenges lie ahead. Even the residence of a government minister is waterlogged, underscoring the severity of the situation in the national capital.
