The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is set to begin NEET-UG counselling registration for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses. Candidates must select their preferred courses and colleges during the registration process.

Background and Controversy

The initial NEET-UG results, declared on June 4, sparked controversy when 67 students were initially announced as toppers. However, the Supreme Court intervened, directing the National Testing Agency to consider only option number 4 as the correct answer to an ambiguous Physics question. Previously, the NTA had accepted both option 2 and option number 4 as correct.

In response to the Supreme Court’s order, the National Testing Agency promptly revised the results. Approximately 4.2 lakh candidates who had selected option number 2 will now lose four marks due to this correction. As a result, the number of toppers has been further reduced from 67 to 61, and now stands at 17.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate Medical Courses) matter, emphasizing that truth had prevailed. During a press briefing, Pradhan welcomed the court’s stance, declaring, “‘Satyamev Jayate’—truth has triumphed.”

The Education Minister also took a firm stand against exam irregularities, asserting that anyone involved in such breaches would face consequences. “We have zero tolerance for violations,” he stated, emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining the integrity of examinations.

The Supreme Court dismissed pleas seeking the cancellation and re-test of the 2024 NEET-UG, citing a lack of evidence to conclude that the exam’s sanctity had been compromised. This verdict brings relief to lakhs of hardworking and honest students who had anxiously awaited clarity.

Pradhan further criticized those who had questioned the Indian examination system, accusing them of exploiting the situation for vested interests and political gain. He called for an apology from those who had played with the sentiments of students and parents.

In a significant decision, the Supreme Court refused to cancel the NEET-UG exam, providing crucial support to the BJP-led NDA government and the National Testing Agency (NTA). Both entities had faced intense criticism and protests over alleged malpractices, including question paper leaks and fraud during the May 5 exam.

Pradhan reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining exam sanctity, vowing not to tolerate any breaches. Meanwhile, he chastised the opposition for attempting to create “anarchy and civil unrest” around the NEET issue.

The court’s verdict settles the speculation surrounding NEET-UG and underscores the importance of fair and transparent examinations in India’s education system.
