Massive protest at IIT Guwahati after student found dead in his hostel room

A police officer disclosed that there was an ongoing enquiry and that the student's body was sent for autopsy.

A large number of students of the IIT Guwahati demonstrated on Monday, September 9 after a computer science engineering third year student was found dead in his room, the police and news agency PTI said. As the officials of the Institute revealed, the student lived in the Brahmaputra Hostel of the institute and was from Uttar Pradesh. A police officer disclosed the situation to PTI and said that there was an ongoing inquiry, moreover, the student’s dead body was sent for an autopsy.

Several students stood in front of the administration building protesting demanding justice to the deceased person and treatment of institute students’ stress particularly after the occurrence of the death of the student. Interviewing a news agency, a confirmed student who was involved in the protest said that the victim was a mentally ill person with commensurate medical ailments. The demonstrator added, “He was receiving a treatment and that made him to lose concentration on his books. ”

On the other hand, other protestors were of the opinion that despite the third-year student presenting medical certificates, he was not attended to hence became sadder. Speaking to the raring students, the head of the student welfare service elated the students with the promise of IIT Guwahati appreciating the need of the students’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

A spokesperson for the university said the student’s passing was a blow to the IIT Guwahati. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the spokesperson said. “The well-being of students is the top priority of IITG and it is committed to providing support and resources to help students navigate the challenges they may face,” he added.

The spokesperson also encouraged the institute’s student community to reach out to its support networks. “IITG reaffirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and safe environment for all students,” he said.

This was the four time of such fatalities in the campus this year and the second one in one month. Accompanying violence, one of the female MTech students at the institute was found dead in her bed in a dormitory on August, 9. Her native state was –Uttar Pradesh in India. No one saw her throughout the day and were able to notice her absence from the courses; that is when they found the lifeless body of the woman.
