Unprecedented record number of Indian students in Canada: MEA

Many students face difficulties related to accommodation, food, and securing work permits due to overcrowding.

According to recent information presented to the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), there has been a record number of Indian students in Canada despite diplomatic strains. In 2023, the number of Indian students studying in Canada reached an unprecedented high of 4.27 lakh. This marks the highest figure ever recorded and highlights Canada’s continued appeal as a premier destination for Indian students, despite ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada.

Current Figures and Trends

The data presented to the Upper House reveals that Canada now hosts 4,27,085 Indian students, marking the highest number ever recorded. This substantial figure places Canada at the top of the list for Indian students studying abroad. The United States follows closely with 3,51,106 Indian students, while the United Arab Emirates and Australia also see significant numbers, with 2,47,325 and 1,24,829 students respectively.

Minister of State (MoS) in MEA Kirti Vardhan Singh, in response to queries from Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, confirmed that the number of Indian students in Canadian universities has been increasing over the past three years. Singh highlighted that despite deteriorating bilateral relations, which have been strained due to issues such as the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Indian students continue to flock to Canada for educational opportunities.

Challenges and Concerns

The rising number of Indian students traveling to Canada comes with its set of challenges. Many students face difficulties related to accommodation, food, and securing work permits due to overcrowding. Despite these hurdles, the influx of Indian students has not significantly diminished, reflecting the robust demand for Canadian education.

However, there have been concerns regarding the safety and well-being of Indian students abroad. Data presented in Parliament revealed that Canada has the highest number of deaths among Indian students studying overseas, with 91 out of 403 reported fatalities since 2018. According to a News18 report dated October 12, 2023, the remains of five to eight Indian students are repatriated from Canada each month, underscoring the challenges faced by students living far from home.

The MEA’s response also noted that the number of Indian students studying abroad has hit a three-year high, with 13,18,955 students across 68 nations in 2023. This is a notable increase from the 9,07,404 students recorded in 2022 and 11,58,702 in 2021. This trend reflects the growing global interest in Indian students pursuing education abroad, despite the challenges and diplomatic tensions that may arise.

In conclusion, the “Record Number of Indian Students in Canada Despite Diplomatic Strains” underscores the resilience and determination of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad. Despite facing significant obstacles and diplomatic challenges, Canada remains a top destination for Indian students. The continued rise in enrollment highlights the enduring appeal of Canadian universities and the commitment of Indian students to advancing their educational and professional aspirations on an international stage.

MEA Singh responded by saying that, according to data held by the Ministry, the number of Indian students studying in certain nations has been rising, while it has decreased in others. The response emphasized that the Government of India supports only lawful immigration and mobility from India, including for students.

The ongoing increase in Indian students pursuing education in Canada, despite diplomatic tensions, reflects the enduring appeal of Canadian institutions and the value students place on international education opportunities. It also raises important questions about the broader impacts of geopolitical issues on global educational exchanges.
