Indian Railways is taking a step

For many passengers, train journeys in India can be marred by the unpleasant condition of toilets. However, Indian Railways is taking a step forward to tackle this issue by leveraging innovative technology.
A pilot project spearheaded by Mumbai-based startup Viliso Technologies is utilizing the power of the Internet of Things (IoT) to detect and address unpleasant odours emanating from train toilets. This project represents a significant step towards improving hygiene and passenger comfort.

The core of this initiative lies in the use of smart devices like "Gandhvedh," developed by Viliso Technologies. These devices function like electronic noses, equipped with sensors that can detect bad odours, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), temperature, and humidity levels within train toilets.

The data collected by these sensors is then transmitted to a central hub for real-time analysis. If the analysis identifies an issue, such as excessive odour or high levels of TVOCs, the hub can automatically trigger alerts for sanitation staff. This ensures a prompt response to maintain cleanliness and prevent unpleasant conditions.

This novel approach offers several advantages:

1) Real-time monitoring allows railway authorities to stay informed about the status of train toilets and address problems before they escalate.

2) Faster intervention by sanitation staff minimizes the inconvenience faced by passengers.

3) Ultimately, this initiative aims to create a more pleasant and hygienic travel experience for everyone.

The project is currently in its pilot phase, with these smart devices being installed in select train coaches. The success of this pilot program will determine the wider implementation of this technology across the Indian Railway network.

The use of IoT in tackling the issue of unclean toilets presents a promising solution. If successful, this project has the potential to significantly improve sanitation standards on Indian trains, leading to a more positive travel experience for millions of passengers.

This initiative by Indian Railways demonstrates a commitment to innovation and passenger comfort. The successful implementation of this technology can serve as a model for other transportation networks seeking to address similar challenges. By embracing technological advancements, Indian Railways can strive towards a cleaner, more hygienic, and ultimately, more pleasant travel experience for all.
