In its first cabinet meeting, the recently established NDA government resolved to extend support for the construction of homes to an additional three crore rural and urban households.
This decision was made in response to the growing number of families qualifying for housing assistance. Over the past decade, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has facilitated the completion of 4.21 crore houses for deserving low-income families.
This cabinet meeting of the NDA government took place the day after Narendra Modi was inaugurated as India’s Prime Minister for the third time. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, was a grand affair.
On the same day, PM Modi approved the release of the 17th instalment of PM Kisan Nidhi, marking his first official act of the day.
The ceremony also saw the swearing-in of senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and Amit Shah as cabinet ministers. In a notable return, party president J P Nadda rejoined the cabinet after a five-year hiatus, signalling PM Modi’s emphasis on continuity and experience in his third term.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched by the government to aid eligible rural and urban households in building homes equipped with basic amenities. All homes built under the PMAY are provided with essential facilities such as household toilets, LPG connections, electricity connections, and functional household tap connections. These amenities are provided in collaboration with other Central Government and State Government schemes.
In the interim budget announced in February, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman declared plans to construct an additional two crore houses under the scheme over the next five years.
