The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday filed its initial charge sheet in the RG Kar rape and murder case and detained the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, for the August 9 rape and killing of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, is accused of committing the murder on August 9 when the victim went to sleep in the hospital's seminar room during a break, according to the chargesheet the CBI submitted before a special court in Kolkata. However, the investigation agency made no mention of the gang rape claim, suggesting that Roy was the only one who committed the crime.
Roy was observed entering the lecture room at 4:03 am on the day of the incident in CCTV footage and about 30 minutes later left the room. Moreover, his Bluetooth headphones were discovered by the Kolkata police at the crime scene. The CBI added that they are currently looking into whether or not evidence in the rape and murder case was destroyed. About 200 persons' testimonies are included in the charge sheet that names Roy, according to CBI sources cited in an NDTV report.
All around Kolkata and West Bengal, protests broke out calling for the justice for the 31-year-old trainee physician who had been sexually assaulted and killed inside the hospital's seminar room, where she had taken a break during her night shift. A young physician discovered her body the following morning. In addition to revealing that she had been murdered and raped, the post-mortem report also showed that she had sustained 25 external and internal injuries.
The Calcutta High Court, citing inconsistencies that "leave room for suspicion," ordered the CBI to take over the RG Kar rape and murder investigation from Kolkata Police on August 13. In a lie-detector exam, Roy asserted his innocence. He said the victim was already unconscious on August 9 when he walked inside the seminar hall.
