Netflix summoned for displaying explicit content accessible to minors

The Commission has scheduled a hearing for Netflix India on July 29 at 3 pm, however, it remains unclear which specific shows or movies are implicated

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken action against Netflix India following allegations of explicit content being accessible to minors on the streaming platform. NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanoongo issued official summons to Ms. Monica Shergill, Vice President, and Ms. Ambika Khurana, Policy Head of Netflix India.

What is the Complaint on Netflix?

The complaint, filed by Shri Uday Mahurkar of the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation, highlights the unlawful showcasing of explicit material. The content allegedly includes private body parts of both males and females, as well as explicit sexual activity involving various combinations (male-female, male-male, female-female, and group scenarios). Additionally, bizarre scenes depicting sexual activity with male testicles and male ejaculation onto a female’s face have been reported.

As stated in the notice, “The complaint alleged that the platform is unlawfully showcasing the most horrendous content including private parts of males and females and explicit sexual activity between a male and female two males, two females a group of males, group of females, group of males and females (orgies), etc. The platform is also showcasing bizarre scenes where a male is shown involved in sexual activity with another male’s testicles and another scene in which a male ejaculates his semen on a female’s face. Consequently, this content is easily accessible to minors on the platform.”

“It has been observed that the unrestricted accessibility of explicit content on the platform to minors constitutes a violation of Section 11 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. This section stipulates that a person is said to commit sexual harassment upon a child when such person with sexual intent shows any object to a child in any form or media for pornographic purpose,” the notice stated.

The Commission has scheduled a hearing for Netflix India on July 29 at 3 pm. However, it remains unclear which specific shows or movies are implicated, given that the platform hosts content from around the world and is accessible to millions of subscribers.

As of now, Netflix India has not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
