NEET-UG 2024: SC rules out ‘systemic breach’ in exam, says leak limited

CBI's investigation has led to several arrests, with thirteen individuals named in the initial charge sheet related to the exam paper leak.

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed allegations of a “systemic breach” related to the NEET-UG 2024 exam and clarified that any leaks were limited to Patna and Hazaribagh. This ruling came amidst ongoing scrutiny and legal challenges concerning the integrity of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG) conducted on May 5, 2024. The court’s decision addresses concerns over potential tampering with the examination and reflects the broader controversy surrounding the testing process.

Court’s Critique and Directive on NEET-UG 2024

The Supreme Court’s statement emphasized that the issues with NEET-UG 2024 did not indicate a widespread or systemic breach of the examination’s security. Despite the court’s finding, it criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for failing to address existing “loopholes” and directed the agency to implement stricter measures to prevent future discrepancies. This directive underscores the court’s concern over the exam’s integrity and the need for improved security protocols to safeguard the examination process.

The NEET-UG 2024, which is a crucial test for students seeking admission into medical programs across Indian universities, has faced significant controversy. Following the results announcement on June 4, which identified an unprecedented number of top scorers, multiple petitions were filed with the Supreme Court. These petitions highlighted suspicions of tampering and demanded a thorough examination of the examination process. The court’s intervention in the case resulted in the updated merit list, featuring 17 toppers, aiming to address concerns raised by the petitioners.

Despite the ongoing investigation and the court’s refusal to order a repeat of the NEET-UG 2024 exam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively involved in probing the issue. The CBI’s investigation has led to several arrests, with thirteen individuals named in the initial charge sheet related to the exam paper leak. The agency’s inquiry revealed the involvement of a transstate gang that allegedly leaked the exam material for substantial sums of money.

Political Fallout and Calls for Reform

The NEET-UG 2024 controversy has also sparked a significant political debate. Opposition parties have intensified their criticism of the central government and called for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The dispute has become a focal point in the political arena, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) facing mounting pressure from various quarters.

In response to the ongoing issues with NEET-UG 2024, state assemblies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have passed resolutions urging the central government to discontinue the NEET test. These resolutions advocate for the states to administer their own entrance exams, arguing that decentralizing the testing process could reduce the potential for corruption and ensure a more transparent and fair examination process.

The push for state-level exams reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current system and highlights the need for reforms in the examination process. The NEET-UG 2024 controversy has brought to light significant concerns about the integrity of national-level entrance tests and has fueled calls for a reevaluation of how these exams are conducted and regulated.

As the investigation continues and political discussions unfold, the NEET-UG 2024 remains a contentious issue, with ongoing scrutiny from various stakeholders. The Supreme Court’s recent dismissal of systemic breach claims, coupled with the CBI’s investigation and political backlash, underscores the complexity and high stakes involved in the debate over India’s medical entrance examination system.
